Location: Hampshire College Campus in Amherst, MA
Reports to: Senior Director of Justice, Equity, and Antiracism - Community Care & Wellbeing

We provide residential undergraduate education to approximately 900 students. Working across the community care and wellbeing team, the residence life coordinator fosters learning by providing leadership training, administrative guidance, and opportunities for involvement.
Residence life is housed in the division of justice, equity, and antiracism (JEA) and the residence life coordinator will be instrumental in helping the College move closer to achieving its ambitious antiracism and equity objectives through active community building. Successful candidates will also possess strong communication skills, cultural competence, and previous experience in residence life or related student-centered roles.
An on-campus apartment is provided for this live-in position and is expected to serve as a primary residence. The residence life coordinator must serve on an on-call schedule rotation within Hampshire’s community responder model. Some evenings and weekends are require.
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The residence life coordinator is a full-time, 12-month, live-on professional staff member in the office of residence life and student engagement. The residence life coordinator reports directly to the senior director of residence life and student engagement and shares in the responsibility for all facets of the residence life program for students living in traditional and apartment style housing. Administrative responsibilities include but are not limited to managing budget for community building, programming, and student staff development. This position supports housing operations functions, including opening and closing of residence halls, access control, and follow-up on facilities and housekeeping concerns. The residence life coordinator will have the opportunity to lead and manage key operational aspects of residence life such as student staff recruitment, student staff annual and in-house training, and other projects.
The residence life coordinator is a student development practitioner who cares deeply about forming strong relationships and engaging in meaningful experiences with students, open to new and challenging experiences directed towards professional growth and committed to creating and contributing to an inclusive campus community.
The student affairs team provides 24-hour/day support and resources to student residents via an on-call system. This position provides non-clinical counseling to students in a wide variety of emergency and non-emergency situations, assessing for safety in each case. Provide crisis management and response as the first-line of emergency on-call personnel. Develop and supervise approximately five residence life student staff. Collaborate with campus partners to intervene with and support students of concern and students at-risk.
This position will be a member of and collaborate with the residence life and student engagement team. Partnering with the assistant director of student engagement, the residence life coordinator will provide co-curricular and social activities for students throughout the academic year (evenings and weekends) and encourage community development within the student residences. The residence life coordinator will oversee targeted outreach to promote these activities to students of the community in which they live in.
The residence life coordinator will contribute to campus-wide educational initiatives, for instance the New Student Orientation, Community Orientation, and Community Days of Learning that advance the College’s commitment to justice, equity, and antiracism. The residence life coordinator participates as a committed member of the student affairs team in college and division committee work, projects, meetings, retreats, and overall community development: assists in the coordination and facilitation of academic courses, co-curricular activities and services for students. Availability to work occasional nights and weekends is required.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Understanding of Student Development Theory
- Strong supervisory skills

- Ability to pay close attention to detail for budget tracking
- Familiarity with computer programs: Microsoft Office Suite, Information management (Colleague), social media applications
- Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments; Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
- Ability to work effectively with students and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes justice, equity, and anti-racism.
2. Preferred
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in residence life and/or student affairs
- On-call and crisis management experience
- Experience working with identity-based housing, theme housing, and/or living learning communities
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Four-year college degree or equivalent
- One year of experience working in residence life and/or student facing role
Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
